Statement from Sen. Alan Simpson & Erskine Bowles On Budget Alternative Proposed by Reps. Steve LaTourette and Jim Cooper

March 27, 2012

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressmen Steve LaTourette (R-OH) and Jim Cooper (D-TN) unveiled a bipartisan budget alternative based on the recommendations of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform which they intend to put forward when the House of Representatives debates the fiscal year 2013 budget resolution this week. Fiscal Commission and Moment of Truth project co-chairs Erskine Bowles and Senator Alan Simpson offered the following joint statement in praise of the release:

"We are very encouraged to see members of both parties actually working together to put forward a budget based on the recommendations of the Fiscal Commission bipartisan plan to put our nation on a solid path towards fiscal responsibility and reform. We are most certainly on an unsustainable path, and this bipartisan plan makes some sensible choices to achieve long-term fiscal stability.

“The American people do understand the importance of dealing with this problem and will support the Congress if it makes the big, bold, smart decisions so necessary to bring our debt under control in a way that does not disrupt the fragile economic recovery.  The public are counting on their leaders to pull together, not pull apart, and to work together on a bipartisan agreement that truly and honestly tackles our debt problem. That is the approach taken in the budget being offered by Representatives Jim Cooper and Steven LaTourette.

“Congressmen Cooper and LaTourette have shown tremendous courage, leadership, and determination in putting the national interest ahead of partisan interests by offering this bold fiscal plan that takes on the sacred cows of both sides and calls for the kind of broad based reform that we simply must have if we are to avoid a crisis.

“The approach they have put forward represents the best hope for achieving the broad, bipartisan support necessary to enact a plan to bring our debt under control.  We urge their colleagues in the House and Senate to follow their gutsy leadership in pushing for a bold, bipartisan plan to bring our horrendous debt under control.”
